Arun Kundnani is a writer interested in race, Islamophobia, surveillance, political violence, and radicalism. A good introduction to his overall political perspective is this article, first published in the Guardian: There are two kinds of antiracism.
Born in London, Kundnani moved to New York in 2010 and now lives in Philadelphia. The Guardian has described him as “one of Britain’s best political writers.”
Kundnani is the author of What is Antiracism? (Verso, 2023), The Muslims are Coming! (Verso, 2014) and The End of Tolerance (Pluto, 2007), which was selected as a New Statesman book of the year, and co-author of Homeland Security: Myths and Monsters (Common Notions, 2024). He has written for the Nation, the Guardian, the Washington Post, and The Intercept. A former editor of the journal Race & Class, he holds a PhD from London Metropolitan University and is an Associate of the Transnational Institute.
Kundnani is currently working on a biography of Jamil Al-Amin, formerly known as H. Rap Brown, to be published by Doubleday. The project has been supported with a 2024 Whiting Creative Nonfiction grant, and a grant from the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture at New York Public Library.

Dear Designation and Sentence Computation Center, USP Tucson, and BOP Central Office Staff,
I am an Austrian citizen, a retired official of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, and a former representative of this organization in the Austrian Board of Parole.
I received information about inmate Jamil Al-Amin, 99974-555, from American citizens.
I am writing to request for the emergency medical transfer of Imam Jamil Al-Amin, Register Number: 99974-555, from United States Penitentiary (USP) Tucson, Arizona to Federal Medical Center (FMC) Butner, North Carolina, where Imam Jamil will be able to receive immediate medical treatment for the enormous recent growth on his face that has been left untreated.Imam Jamil is currently 81 years old and facing debilitating and potentially life-threatening conditions from this growth. This is on top of his multiple myeloma (cancer), previous strokes, and other significant medical issues.
Imam Jamil Al-Amin is a civil rights leader and human rights activist who has been wrongfully imprisoned for the past 24 years. He deserves to be reunited with his family, legal counsel, and supporters who are 1,700 miles away from him during his feeble age. Though he is a state of Georgia prisoner, Imam Jamil was secretly transferred, without knowledge of his family or legal counsel, from Georgia State Prison into the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons in 2007, even though he has not been charged, convicted, or sentenced for a federal crime.
Furthermore, his case is currently under review by the Fulton County District Attorney’s Conviction Integrity Unit. His lack of physical representation and proximity in or near Georgia during this process is hindering a fair opportunity for his justice. Imam Jamil has the potential to be exonerated and freed twenty four years after his wrongful conviction for a crime that another man has repeatedly admitted to committing.
For all the reasons mentioned, I request that the Federal Bureau of Prisons immediately transfer Imam Jamil Al-Amin from USP Tucson to FMC Butner to receive immediate medical treatment and be closer to his family and legal counsel during the Imam’s old age and process for retrial. This request is in the public interest of all those who stand for justice and human rights.
